Ashtanga Yoga with Kino MacGregor
Ashtanga yoga traces its lineage to an ancient sage named Vamana Rishi and it is through a long line of students who became teachers themselves that we now have access to the heritage of yoga. Ashtanga literally means eight limbs and is defined by the sacred yogic text, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras as Yama (moral codes), Niyama (self-purification and study), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense control), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (total peace). Ideally teachers are well-versed in all eight limbs before they begin teaching so that they may truly guide the student through the entire journey of yoga.
While containing six series of postures, most practitioners spend their entire lives working on the first or "Primary Series" of Ashtanga Yoga because its level of strength and flexibility is already quite challenging. Yet the Primary Series is a complete practice that can help you heal your body and mind.
The physical practice of yoga can be likened to brushing your teeth. Without a daily routine plaque and tartar accumulate and cause a pricey visit to the dentist. Just like brushing your teeth, with yoga you get to scrub your thoughts and clean out your body. It is no magic pill and for total healing you may need to explore many complimentary approaches to the body and mind, including therapy, meditation, energy healing and more. It is through your own effort that you purify your body. Yoga is as strong as you make it and takes you as deep as you are willing to go.

The body and mind both open when given time and space to unfold in long supported holds. Learn a new paradigm for your practice where less effort equals more results. Drop into the inner body and discover healing, quietness and wisdom. This immersion is the antidote to the goal-oriented mindset. Understand what it means to practice with non-attachment and be in a fully surrendered state. Leave with an impartation of the most subtle teachings of yoga.

Be ready for a deep journey into the inner body complete with a detailed muscular and skeletal technique and the subtle body of emotions and energy. Learn how to create the safe space of patience, kindness and tolerance in the deepest regions of the pelvis and watch your hips open.

Yoga for Kino is more than just a “workout”— it is a way life founded on a firm commitment to the moral and ethical precepts of truth, non-violence and love. Being strong in yoga is just not about a powerful handstand or a deep backbend for Kino, nor is yoga a game of extreme ableism where yogis compete with one another. Instead, Kino sees yoga a daily ritual where people tune deeply in to their spiritual center and experience the peace of the Eternal Divine. Kino believes in making the tools of traditional yoga accessible for all different sizes, shapes, ethnicities and ages and writes a weekly Yogi Assignment blog based on her popular Yogi Assignment book. Rather than it being an exclusive club for the privileged elite, yoga is for everyone and it is the international community of yogis who are responsible for the integrity of the sacred heart of yoga.
Kino says "My personal practice is based in the Ashtanga Yoga method. I have been dedicated to a daily, six-day-a-week practice for over 20 years. Over the last twenty years I have made annual trips to Mysore, India to study Ashtanga Yoga with my teachers the late K. Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R. Sharath Jois."
